Uses:

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): PMS refers to the symptoms experienced by women in the weeks preceding their period. Common symptoms include mood swings, feelings of disturbance, worry, or irritation, exhaustion or difficulty sleeping, bloating, stomach pain, breast tenderness, headaches, changes in appetite, and spotty skin.

Mastalgia (Breast Pain): Mastalgia is associated with hormonal variations related to the menstrual cycle or non-cyclical factors. Normal fibrocystic changes can cause breast pain, swelling, or dense areas. Symptoms include breast tenderness, sharp, burning pain, and tightness in the breast tissue.

Acne Vulgaris (Acne): Acne vulgaris is a skin condition caused by the blockage of follicles with oil and dead skin cells. It includes various types such as whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, cysts, and nodules. While common in teenagers, it can affect individuals of all age groups.

Eczema: Eczema is a skin condition characterized by inflamed, itchy, cracked, and rough skin patches. It is a chronic condition that can result in discomfort and skin changes.

Side Effects of

Adverse effects are rare at recommended dosages. Overdose may cause loose stool and abdominal pain.

Pharmacology:

• Improves EFA composition in various body lipids.
• Increases total fat and EFA content in mother's milk.
• Affects fatty acid composition in serum lipids and adipose tissue.
• Helps maintain normal cellular structures and is a precursor of prostaglandins.

Dosage & Administration:

• Atopic & Allergic Dermatitis:
  • Adult: 1 capsule 2 times daily.
  • Children: 1 capsule 1/2 times daily.
• Benign Breast Disease & Mastalgia:
  • 1 capsule 2/3 times daily with or after a meal.
• Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS):
  • 1 capsule 2 times daily in the morning & night with or after a meal.
• Rheumatoid Arthritis:
  • 1 capsule daily or as directed by the registered physician.

Interaction

There are no known drug interactions. Steroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may potentially interfere with essential fatty acid metabolism.

Contraindications

• Previously not recommended for patients diagnosed with schizophrenia.
• Recent analysis did not indicate clear therapeutic or adverse effects on schizophrenic patients.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

• Evening primrose oil may be taken while nursing.
• Pregnant or lactating women should get 5% of their total daily caloric intake from EFAs.

Precautions & Warnings

• Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) is generally considered safe when used in recommended dosages.
• Reported side effects are rare and mild, including nausea, stomach pain, and headache.
• Stomach pain and loose stools may indicate that the dose is too high, and adjustment may be needed.
• Omega-6 supplements, including Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) found in EPO, should not be used by individuals with epilepsy or another seizure disorder due to reported instances of these supplements triggering seizures.
• Individuals with bleeding problems or a blood disorder should avoid taking EPO.
• Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to consult their doctors before taking Evening Primrose Oil.
